Poet Hugo Williams held the UEA writing fellowship in 1981. Among the several awards he has received for his poetry are an Eric Gregory Award in 1966, a Cholmondeley Award in 1971, the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize for Love-Life in 1980, the T.S. Eliot Prize for Billy’s Rain in 1999, and the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry for his Collected Poems in 2004.
