Biography

Novelist and short story writer Ali Smith held the UEA writing fellowship in 1999 and returned as the inaugural UNESCO City of Literature Visiting Professor in 2012. Her first collection of short stories, Free Love and Other Stories won the Saltire First Book of the Year Award. Among her other publications, her second novel Hotel World won the Encore Award and was shortlisted for the Orange Prize and the Man Book Booker Prize; The Accidental was also was shortlisted for the Orange Prize and the Man Book Booker Prize and was the winner of the 2005 Whitbread Novel of the Year Award; How To Be Both was shortlisted for the Bailey’s Prize, the Folio Prize, and the Man Book Booker Prize, and was the winner of the Goldsmiths Prize and the Novel Award in the 2014 Costa Book Awards; Autumn was shortlisted for the 2017 Man Booker Prize. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by UEA in 2016.
