Biography

Novelist, playwright and essayist Caryl Phillips was UEA’s UNESCO City of Literature visiting professor in 2017-18. Selected as one of Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists in 1993, his novel of that year Crossing the River was the winner of the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. He was awarded the Martin Luther King Memorial Prize for his 1987 collection of essays The European Tribe. His twelfth novel A View of the Empire at Sunset was published in 2018.
